Hamilton Chace’em Fun Run 2013

The Dream Chaser Foundation hosted another fantastic Fun Run family day in Hamilton over the weekend! (3rd November 2013).  After a nervous night hoping for sunny weather, we woke to beautiful blue skies.  We decided to include more attractions for families to enjoy which made for a great little “Dream Chaser city” at Innes Commons.

Participants had taken up the “lello” challenge and dressed accordingly, as always, its lovely to see so many Dream Chaser tees and we loved the originality of some of the more “fancy dress” outfits. Even our friend “Pikachu” was there again, he is proving to be a familiar face at our fun runs.

There was a real family friendly atmosphere at Event Central with children enjoying the massive bouncy castle and slide, receiving a balloon animal from the stilt walker or getting their face painted. As families sat down to enjoy a hot lunch and some sweet treats (thanks to our awesome home bakers), we introduced the “Modern Maori Quartet” – these lads were fantastic! Travelling from Auckland to support our kaupapa, they were the highlight of the day.  Sporting Dream Chaser tees, they sung beautifully and added some humour to their acts which the crowd loved. A special part for us was their dedication to children who have passed from cancer, a sad but special moment.

Prize giving is always a highlight – this year we had over $2800 worth of prizes to give away, each prize ranging from $50 to over $270 each! (10 kids spot prizes, 15 Adult and 5 online prizes). We are proud to offer such awesome spot prizes and we are very thankful to Hamilton, Whakatane and other national businesses for seeing the value in the work of the Dream Chaser Foundation does for children with cancer by donating goods and services.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the fun run, those who came down to check out the entertainment, our wonderful volunteers and bakers and to everyone who had a role in making the day the success it was.

See you next year for the Hamilton Chace’em Fun Run  2014!

A successful Sunshine Week

Sunshine week was a great success! It all came together wonderfully thanks to all our Dream Chaser supporters. Admittedly, it was tough on Ryan and me emotionally, we anticipated that it would be, but we also knew it would be quite therapeutic for us as well. It was an absolute joy to be able to meet some of the children and families on the ward, and to drop off a little bit of sunshine. Thanks to the massive efforts by the Warehouse Whakatane, our present stock grew like crazy which meant that every child on the ward was able to receive a present. We were even able to extend this to our Dream Chaser Families (those families who have registered with us). So it made for a bigger and better “present drop” than we had imagined.
The dates were very significant to us, we wanted to draw attention to our bone marrow campaign in a subtle way, in amongst all the fun activities, so we scheduled Sunshine Week around the anniversary of Chace’s Stem Cell Transplant day. Part of this was dedicating Monday as “Nurse Appreciation Day”, our way of saying thank you for looking after our babies as they receive treatment. Bone marrow transplants, while relatively straight forward for the donor, can be very rough on the recipient so this is a particularly difficult time for a child and their families, nurses play a central role as carer and friend during these recovery phases.
We also spent part of this day touring NZ Blood Headquarters, and received the necessary training to become bone marrow recruiters! This is a big deal for us, in addition to promoting bone marrow donation at our Dream Chaser events, we can now tag along to mobile blood collection days and officially recruit donors on the spot too!
In summery, Sunshine Week was a week full of “lello-ness”, smiles and cheer. It couldn’t have been possible without the following support:
Dream Chaser Supporters and Volunteers- It’s everyone’s collective support that makes if possible for us to host such events. Thank you to all the people who donated toys, sunshine letters and goods. They all found very deserving homes. Thank you to those who donated money, visited Z, and offered kind words of support. And to our wonderful Dream Chaser Crew of family members and friends, thank you once again for making our baby’s charity the success that it is. It all came together perfectly because of everyone’s help.

SUNSHINE WEEK – (July 27th – August 2nd 2013)

[mls_h4]what is Sunshine Week all about?[/mls_h4]

Here at the Dream Chaser Foundation, we do things a little differently, so our focus for this week is going to be all about GIVING. Your on-going support has allowed us to make this week really special. We have worked hard to incorporate children, parents, Ronald Mc Donald House, Starships Oncology Ward, Nurses and medical staff into our celebrations with the goal as spreading as much sunshine and smiles as we can in 7 days.

[mls_h4]What so significant about this particular week?[/mls_h4]

On the 29th July 2011, our bubba received his stem cell transplant. This was a very significant day for our whanau, after the devastating news that there were no live bone marrow donors for our boy, a stem cell transplant was the next best thing. It gave us many healthy months with our boy, and for that reason, it will forever be a special day on our hearts. This is our way of celebrating transplants while drawing attention to the need for more bone marrow donors.

VICTORIES – MMA Whakatane Fight Night

What an action packed night! Massive thanks to Brad Kora and the team at MMA Whakatane for inviting us to be part of their very successful fight night. With an impressive line up of competitors from all over NZ, it drew a great crowd. The Dream Chaser Foundation were stoked to be able to use this platform to promote our  Bone Marrow message. While it was a bit daunting entering the cage to address the crowd, we knew that we are engaged in our  own fight, THE FIGHT FOR LIFE – that is what bone marrow does, it gives cancer patients a fighting chance at beating the disease, so no matter the nerves, we knew we had to face the crowd and do our Dream Chaser thing!

We were warmly welcomed, as we knew we would have been. Whakatane is our home crowd so many people already knew why we were there. To receive applause from the crowd when we mentioned the number of people we have encouraged to register their interest in becoming a bone marrow donor was a defining moment indeed. It made us feel that the hard work is paying off.

So another awesome event supporting the Dream Chaser Foundation – thank you so much to Brad and MMA Whakatane – see you  all next fight night!

Bone Marrow Drive – GISBORNE

It’s a great feeling to see our plans actually come together. Back in June, when we first thought of the idea of a bone marrow drive, I was unsure whether it would become a reality, knowing we had a very difficult road ahead of us. However, when I saw my whanau come into the Cosmopolitian Club in Gisbourne, I was proud of us for being able to pull this off. I would have never imagined that this is where we would be, that the words bone marrow would become part of my everyday conversation. There’s no doubt that everyone faced with such a testing hand in life contemplates the “whys” in life, the “why us/me” and the “what the purpose?”, most of us will probably spend the rest of our lives trying to figure that one out. But if we have to endure this road, then I choose to be doing this, promoting bone marrow awareness and helping out others where we can. NZ Blood reported 9 new people on the bone marrow list from the Gisborne collection. While 9 may seem a modest number, when translated to 9 potential live saved, 9 becomes a very significant number. Even if it was 1, then it’s one more person than there was yesterday – and that is worth celebrating.

Ngati Awa Festival 2012 – Come and visit the Dream Chaser’s bone marrow stand

We are proud to announce our  involvement in the Ngati Awa Festival 2012. Be part of an awesome family orientated day, celebrating all things Ngati Awa. The Dream Chaser Foundation will be there promoting bone marrow awareness. This is a special opportunity for us and we look forward to representing our son Chace, in his own rohe (tribal area) through the Charity.

The Dream Chaser Foundation and the NZ Blood Service are working together to increase the number of Maori and Pacific Island people on the Bone Marrow Registry. On site, we will have information and forms to be able to register your interest in donating blood and joining the bone marrow registry.

The NZ Blood Service will be in Whakatane from Wednesday 19th December – Friday 21st December 2012. As our goal is to increase bone marrow donors, the NZ Blood Service will now be collecting blood for tissue typing – the first step of becoming a bone marrow donor.

We will also have Dream Chaser merchandise on sale.
